about

Under capitalism, we become alienated from our needs and our desires. When everything has a price tag, only a few people are able to legally obtain all of their needs and everyone else is taught to suppress them. We are brutalized as children with this forced-realization and we brutalize each other in high school for not meeting these impossible standards.

The imperatives of society shift from Being all you can be, to Having all you can have, to Appearing to be both of the previous while being truly neither.

In this way, all we understand about the world is through representation - everyone is pretending to be something they aren't (wealthy, "beautiful", happy, cool, tough etc - all of these things are determined by television and magazines but also by fanzines and lyric sheets). Preferring these representational proxies, we become fearful of direct confrontation. Because of this, we talk shit about our friends behind their backs or voice our problems to everyone but them.
This isn't a fair way to treat our friends or a productive way of ACTUALLY fixing our problems.
If you are having a problem with a friend or family member, consider pulling them aside and expressing your concerns and needs to them. Similarly, if a friend or family member expresses concerns or needs from you regarding your relationship with them, welcome it. After all, chances are everyone else has already heard about it and if you want to put an end to the endless rumors and banter about yourself, the easiest way is to become easy to talk to.

lyrics

Everything I hear about myself comes from someone else
-in malice - in spite -
second-hand/behind my back
fuck.
